Application mistakes that disqualify your band before anyone listens
The standard ways entries take themselves out of a contest — an unmet condition, a link that will not play, fields answered with the wrong thing — each with the plain fix.

An entry can fail a contest without ever being judged: it takes itself out — on a condition, a dead link, a wrongly filled field — before anyone listens. Each of the standard ways to do that is visible from the outside, in the call's own conditions and form, and each has a fix that costs minutes.
Six ways out, six fixes
Failing a condition you never read
Age limit, region, unsigned status, original material — the conditions are the one part of a call that is not a judgment but a filter: an entry that fails them cannot win, however good the music. The fix: read the conditions before anything else, and skip calls you do not fit. An evening saved is an application for a call you can actually win.
A link that does not play
A private video, a region-locked track, a streaming link that wants an account, a file behind a download page. A reviewer with a long list has no reason to troubleshoot — a link that does not play is an entry that does not exist. The fix: test your link logged out, on a phone, ideally from someone else's network, the day before you submit.
Answering a field with something else
The biography pasted where the form asked what you will play; a cover where the call requires own material; a five-minute showreel where it asked for one song. Fields are questions — answering a different one reads as not listening, which is the one impression a live event cannot risk. The fix: answer each field literally, even when your better material does not fit it.
Ignoring the form's own limits
Length caps, file formats, one-link-only rules. These limits are not taste, they are how the review is organised — an entry that breaks them makes itself unreviewable. The fix is mechanical: re-read the form's fine print once after filling it, before sending.
Treating the deadline as the target
Submission forms are at their most fragile on the last day, and a call that fills its slots early stops reading late entries. The fix: submit well ahead — a late entry meets a fragile form and a jury that may already be choosing. What is open right now is in the list below.
Sending the newest instead of the strongest
The newest song is the one you are excited about; the strongest song is the one that survives being track one of many. They are rarely the same song. The fix: let someone outside the band pick which track leads — they hear it the way a stranger will.
Why the boring mistakes rank first
The order in which these mistakes matter is the order the jury meets your entry: conditions and form first, link second, music last. Why the form itself defines the reading order is the subject of What juries read first.
FAQ: An ambiguous condition, a mistake already sent and reuse
A condition is ambiguous — do we risk it?
Ask the organiser before submitting, not the jury after. A short question to the contact address about an unclear condition is normal; an entry that hopes a condition will be read generously is a coin flip you do not control.
We already sent it and found a mistake — resubmit?
If the form allows updates, use that. If it does not, one short mail to the organiser with the corrected link — once — is reasonable. Do not resubmit from scratch unless the organiser says so: duplicate entries create exactly the confusion the form exists to prevent.
Do we need a new application for every contest?
No — the same three items serve every call: a link that plays, one full-song live video, text that answers the conditions. What changes per call is the check against its conditions and its form limits, and that check is minutes, not an evening.

The short version
Read the conditions first and skip what you do not fit. Test the link logged out. Answer fields literally, keep the form's limits, submit well before the deadline, and let an outsider pick the lead track. None of this improves your music — it makes sure your music is what gets judged. Which calls are open is in Open calls for bands.
We have no inside data on juries. Everything here is either structural — what the calls themselves ask for — or reasoned from the reviewer's situation. The text contains no statistics.

What juries read first in a band application
The reading order is not a secret — the application form creates it: the link, the live video, the short text. And anything outside the form's fields is not guaranteed a reader.
